Wireless: Expanding Your Coverage
Wika Wifi (What IDACOMP Knows About WiFi)
Wi-Fi has become a commodity in our society and synonymous with “Internet”. So much so that the newest generations of kids, even those “techier” ones, don’t know the difference between them.
My son asked the other day while driving down the freeway if he could have Wi-Fi so he could play his games, not knowing that having one without the other was no Bueno. This same child has taken apart electronics and re-built his own headphones with microphone, soldering and all.
As a consumer or a business professional in any industry, we’ve come to expect that nearly wherever we go (restaurant, hotel, another business, etc.) there will be Wi-Fi available to us. If it is not, we may be let down, or even upset. Worse, if it is available but slow, watch out!
As an IT professional, therein can lie the challenge. How do you ensure that you have adequate coverage, adequate capacity, adequate security? Make sure it performs well but doesn’t impede on regular business operations. Most of all, make it seamless so that it remains the afterthought that it has become for everyone.
There are so many things that need to be considered:
- Open, WPA-2, Enterprise
- MAC Filtering
- Client Isolation
- 2.4GHz vs 5GHz
- Client Density
- Bandwidth Allocation
- IP Allocation
- Mesh vs Direct Wired
- Frequencies and Interference
- Campus Layout
IDACOMP has designed and deployed wireless networks from the simple single AP solution to large campuses that span miles between structures. We deal with security ensuring HIPAA compliance while also allowing for guest networks. We calibrate and anticipate band steering and bandwidth shaping to ensure that no single client is consuming too much bandwidth.
